Although its central product, Task Assistant, is now well established in the market place being installed on an estimated 600 ships at the start of 2005, Ulysses Systems was the outstanding candidate for the year''s Technical Innovation Award in the eyes of the judges.

Established in 1996 by a team of people hailing from the Greek shipping community, the company has taken pains to create a truly user-centered suite of maritime software that can be updated to embrace new requirements. Task Assistant, for example, has been praised for its suitability for meeting new Tanker Management and Self Assessment criteria introduced by major oil companies that go further than the International Safety Management Code.

The panel was impressed not only by the innovative approach behind the software which, to put it in simple language, is
designed to "work the way you think". Also noted were the company''s continual investment and updating of the product to take account of industry developments, and the recognition of Task Assistant''s advantages by a growing number of major international shipping companies this year.

Several leading shipping customers have recently cited improvement of safety as a reason for their choice of the system, with one major Scandinavian user saying it assisted "in achieving a higher degree of
safety and efficiency by helping personnel focus on critical, task specific processes." In addition, the nomination for the company stated, "Task Assistant makes the life of seafarers easier and offers important economies in terms of time and money".
