As it is known satellite communications & Information technology are of great importance for the effective and quality operation of shipping companies. Digital Ship organized this year its conference to inform the IT executives of Greek shipping companies of the new products and services in this significant sector

Chairman of the conference was Charis Nassis, Partner, Business & IT Consulting, Akereon and keynote speech was Christophe Vanneste ICT Director and Ivan Renette, PMS project manager. Exmar Shipmanagement, Belgium.
Raynald Leconte, President, France Telecom Marine supported by Michel Verbist, Product manager Satellite Solutions. Orange Business Services shared hrs experience using VSAT maritime communications.

Mr. Piers Cunningham, director of maritime business, lnmarsat talked about developments with Fleet Broadband - new products user experience so far and loannis Ioannou ICT Manager, Athenian Sea Carriers gave a short talk on experiences so far testing Fleet Broadband on new buildings

Tasos Makris, Gourdomichalis Maritime discussed now to make software and satcoms more usable onboard.
Mr. Aris lnglessis. ICT Manager of Samos Steamship said that decision to implement software is with the department in charge. The dept does the research for the appropriate program according to its needs.

Mr. Achilleas Choursoglou told that all programs must be connected on the same platform and cannot be without common values.

Mr. Panteleimon Pantelis from Ulysses said that integration is not a problem. The problem is to understand the program. It's a management decision and the IT department is a very critical chain to this decision.

Mr. Achilles Choursoglou presented NETU's program implemented by Olympic Management and used on the performance management & reporting.

Mr. Dimitris Orfanos from Dorian Hellas told about Building a Safety Culture Dorian Hellas was established in 1973 and today controls 6 ships, 3 tankers and 3 VLG carriers.Dorian has experienced & expertised people operating in a very demanding market. He pointed out the need for proactiveness, anticipate problems, solve before happen, transparency & sharing, increased sophistication and need for trust. He explained that a proactive safety culture is the product of individual and group values, attitude perceptions and mentality of everything.
It has to cover routine operations, managing problems, records and human behavior. The key element of safety culture is proactiveness which includes focus on preventive measures, talk and think about past and possible future problems, learn from disseminate experience, remind about past incidents. It is necessary the top management commitment, lead by example and prepared to bear the cost which means spend on hardware and no budgetary restrictions, not the cheapest equipment, spend on topical, non mandatory training, take onboard near misreporting and building confidence.
Mr Orfanos noted that when an accident happens we do investigation reports and then issue Safety warnings, posters and other. Barriers in building a safety culture can be considered suspicious people due to unawareness and due to the "That’s not how we used to do things".
Concluding Mr. Orfanos said that safety aims at reducing the frequency and severity of accidents.

Mr Stylianos Siafakas of Capital Management referred to Integrated Management system. Capital Shipmanagement works with Fortune Technologies using tremendous information filters to take right decision. Therefore, the development of the right software management system is necessary regarding the following items: ISM, ISPS, ILO, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, Business continuity Management, Stock Exchange requirements, inspection management, events management, incident station, business analytics, KPIs, benchmarking.
Capital Shipmanagement operates 30 tankers. It has developed a current rnanagement system and distributes the manuals to the vessels. The manuals are fully electronic. The system gives the ability to search electronic forms and filling them electronically. He also explained software for incident management, deficiency management inspection management, incident investigation & Root cause analysis and automatic reporting and distribution.
Finally, he referred to the benchmarking & KPIs control. Till summer of 2010 Capital will have developed fully electronic manuals and electronic signatures will be ready.
