Ulysses Systems' Task Assistant(TM) Chosen by Upper Lakes Group For Its Great Lakes Fleet

DETROIT 04 March 2002: /PRNewswire/ -- Upper Lakes Group, Inc. has selected Ulysses Systems' Task Assistant(TM) as the ship management software of choice for its fleet of 22 dry bulk cargo vessels that sail on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway systems.

In making the announcement, Upper Lakes' President and CEO Marcel J. Rivard said, "We chose Task Assistant as part of our ongoing commitment to quality performance and operations excellence. It will help us streamline our operations by allowing us to put in place both audit trail and forms management with our fleet.

"Task Assistant will also provide our crews with critical online access to Upper Lakes' Standard Operations and Health and Safety manuals," Rivard added.

Upper Lakes has already successfully tested the software on one vessel during the winter lay up, and plans to rollout installation for the entire fleet during the remainder of the year. According to Quality Assurance Manager Janis Aldred, "We fully expect the program to decrease the amount of filing and paperwork needed on-board, as well as that between our ships and the home office."

Upper Lakes Group, a private Canadian company headquartered in Toronto, Ont., operates a fleet of self-unloading and conventional bulk carriers with a total capacity of approximately 195,000 and 350,000 dead weight tons respectively, most of which are of maximum seaway size.

"We are pleased to be working with one of the recognized leaders in the marine industry," said Tom Leskie, CEO of Ulysses Systems, Inc. "We feel certain that Task Assistant will not only save time and increase efficiency on board Upper Lakes vessels, but also in their on-shore offices. It's a comprehensive way to manage all marine activities, " he added.

Joe Mara, strategic account executive for Ulysses, said, "Task Assistant's intuitive ease-of-use and flexibility will help Upper Lakes to streamline their processes now and well into the future by means of the most modern technology available."

Ulysses' Task Assistant, Version 2.0 adds new modules for crewing, planned maintenance and purchasing. A groundbreaking software system for ship management, Task Assistant details and documents the entire ship management process, step-by-step, task-by-task according to job function. The program provides shipboard personnel with a variety of forms and checklists, along with access to online manuals, documents, records or company communications they may need. It guides the user and keeps records of every interaction, including every message and every completed task.
